HOT ROD SURF Build Up! Part IV 3-12-08

The next stage of our hot rod build is modifying and mounting an early Ford truck steering box with reinforced gussets and cut down steering shaft. The pitman arm is heated and bent into shape and a drag link is fabricated. A gas tank is fitted and mounted and the floor pan coverings are measured, cut and welded into place. While the floor pans are being finished a custom dash insert is also measured and cut out. Who needs fancy laser cutting when you can use some tin sheers? Look what’s left of the 18 gauge metal sheet after a few sessions of cutting and fitting. Remember in the fifties there where no sawzas only hack saw blades, and all the welding was done with oxy style hammer welding. This part of the build is tedious and very time consuming- it can even make you want to move onto something more mechanical and drive your hot rod around without floor pans- which I have been known to do from time to time. The weather is getting super nice here in SD. Let’s try and get this bad boy on the road before summertime!.
